Why MLB Plays 162 Games: The Marathon Season Explained

The reasoning behind baseball's 162-game season, how it shapes team strategy differently from every other US sport, and what to watch for as the calendar turns.

Baseball asks more of its teams than any other major American sport. Playing nearly every day for six months creates a unique competitive dynamic where roster depth, bullpen management and staying healthy matter far more than any single game.

The daily grind

MLB teams play six or seven games per week from late March through September. Unlike the NFL, where one loss represents roughly six percent of the season, a single MLB loss accounts for barely half a percent. This means that hot streaks and cold streaks even out, and the standings at the end of the season are a remarkably accurate reflection of team quality.

Why 162?

The number traces back to expansion in 1961 and 1962, when the leagues grew from 8 to 10 teams each and increased from 154 games to 162 to accommodate the extra opponents. The count has remained unchanged for over 60 years because the economics and competitive structure are built around it.

Calendar milestones

  • April: Rosters are at their largest and sample sizes are small. Early standings are unreliable.
  • June: The amateur draft arrives, giving struggling teams hope for the future while contenders focus on the present.
  • July trade deadline: The single most transformative day on the calendar, when buyers acquire rentals and sellers restock their farm systems.
  • September: Expanded rosters and the final push for playoff spots. Every game in the last two weeks carries outsized weight.
  • October: The postseason compresses the marathon into a sprint, with best-of-five and best-of-seven series deciding the champion.

What the schedule tells you

A team's remaining schedule is as important as its record. Check the schedule page to see how many games a contender has left against weak opponents versus division rivals. That context turns a raw win-loss record into a meaningful projection.
